Pairing Margaret Leighton and Ralph Richardson, two of Britain's most accomplished film and stage actors, The Passionate Stranger is a gentle satire on the conventions of the romantic novel and the perils of confusing reality with fiction. Directed in inventive fashion by Oscar winner Muriel Box, (sharing writing credits with husband Sydney Box), this hugely engaging comedy is made available here in a brand-new transfer from the original elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Judith Wynter is a happily married novelist whose romantic works are eagerly devoured by scores of female readers. When Carlo, a handsome young Italian chauffeur, arrives to work for Judith and her husband, a professor currently recovering from an attack of paralysis, he causes quite a flutter; when he then reads the manuscript of Judith's latest novel, he jumps to a rather unfortunate conclusion... and life in the Wynter household becomes very complicated indeed! This thesis studies the one-dimensional Bose gas from a few-body perspective. Building up on the familiar two-body physics, successively adding more and more atoms gives an intuitive picture of the many-body physics in the thermodynamic limit. The basic theoretical tools (Fock space, effective interactions, density matrices, and useful soluble models) are introduced in a pedagogical fashion, connecting the few- and many-body viewpoints. An in-depth discussion is devoted to the computational methods used (exact diagonalization and wave-packet dynamics), which are put into the context of common many-body methods, such as DMRG and Quantum Monte Carlo. The few-body picture is then applied to the study of one-dimensional trapped bosons, the main emphasis being on the crossover from weak interactions to the limit of infinite repulsion, where the bosons 'fermionize'.
An emerging criticism to dizzying speed of life and an alternative life style: Slowness has started in Italy and has been diffusing many places in the World by influencing many topics from food to tourism and from fashion to traffic. One of the concepts emerged with this movement is Cittaslow . A story of the cities which object to the homogenization of globalization and which present their own style. Cittaslow (or Slow City), has been manifested in 1999 with the adaptation of slow food philosophy to city life and in the leadership of Carlo Petrini, who became the hero of slow food movement. Today, many destinations all over the world took action within the criteria set forth by International Cittaslow Association to assume the title of Cittaslow. This book was written in order to introduce Cittaslow deeper and to compare seven districts of Mu la province, a world-known tourism destination, that have the potential of becoming a Cittaslow with an empirical analysis on the criteria set forth by the association.
The Teatro della Pergola is a historic opera house in Florence, Italy. It is located in the centre of the city on the Via della Pergola, from which the theatre takes its name. It was built in 1656 under the patronage of Cardinal Gian Carlo de' Medici to designs by the architect Ferdinando Tacca, son of the sculptor Pietro Tacca, its inaugural production was the opera buffa, Il potestà di Colognole by Jacopo Melani. The opera house, the first to be built with superposed tiers of boxes rather than raked semi-circular seating in the Roman fashion, is considered to be the oldest in Italy, having occupied the same site for more than 350 years.
In Quantitative Trait Loci: Methods and Protocols, a panel of highly experienced statistical geneticists demonstrate in a step-by-step fashion how to successfully analyze quantitative trait data using a variety of methods and software for the detection and fine mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL). Writing for the nonmathematician, these experts guide the investigator from the design stage of a project onwards, providing detailed explanations of how best to proceed with each specific analysis, to find and use appropriate software, and to interpret results. Worked examples, citations to key papers, and variations in method ease the way to understanding and successful studies. Among the cutting-edge techniques presented are QTDT methods, variance components methods, and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method for joint linkage and segregation analysis.
The following chapters present most of the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Studies Institute on 'The Physics of Super ionic Conductors and Electrode Materials', held at Odense Univer sity's Mathematics Department between the 4th and 22nd of August, 1980. The aim of the organizing committee was to present in a rather detailed fashion the most recent advances in the computa tional mathematics and physics of condensed matter physics and to see how these advances could be applied to the study of ionically conducting solids. The first half of the meeting was mainly taken up with lectures. In the second week, working groups on the various aspects were set up, the students joining these groups being helped in the implementation of the lecture material. The leaders of these groups deserve special mention for the tremendous effort they put into this aspect of the meeting, particularly: Dr. Aneesur Rahman (Molecular Dynamics group) Dr. Fred Horne (Ion Transport group) Drs. Nick Quirke and David Adams (Monte Carlo methods) Dr. Heinz Schulz (Diffraction group) Dr. John Harding (Defect Calculations group) The Molecular Dynamics group achieved a certain amount of notoriety within the University by appearing to live in the terminal room.
The word 'luxury' has almost lost its meaning. Once used to describe genuinely prestigious products or places, the concept of luxury has been hijacked by a multitude of aspiring or overpriced commodities, from foot spas to chocolates. So what is real luxury? Which are the genuine luxury brands, and how have they reacted to the rise of the 'mass luxury' sector? What strategies do they use to lift themselves into the realm of the truly elite? Who are their customers - and what kind of lives do these remarkable people lead? How do luxury brands attract and retain them? And above all, where can the industry turn now excess is out of fashion? With wit, accuracy and insatiable curiosity, Luxury World takes us on a voyage around the luxury universe, slipping behind the façades of the world's most sophisticated businesses to show the reader how they function. Among other destinations, best-selling author Mark Tungate visits Swiss watchmakers, the Champagne houses of France, the diamond district of Antwerp, the luxury enclave of Monte Carlo, the discreet ateliers of the last craftsmen and a host of brands in Paris - the self-proclaimed capital of elegance. Along the way, he uncovers the true face of today's luxury industry.
